If you’re a fan, this is Well Worth A Look. While it’s a very traditional set-up for a series, you can’t deny the mis-matched male-female will-they-won’t-they design has been very successful in the past, so I’m sure that there are plenty of readers who will appreciate this one. I don’t think this was quite my cup of tea, but I’m confident that Evanovich’s fans will enjoy it more. At the end of the day, the overall plot seemed to get a bit silly towards the end.

It certainly trots along nicely and while it is rarely laugh out loud funny, it remains light-hearted throughout. So now we’ve got a feel for what it is, the next question is whether it’s any good or not? Something like a clean version of Elementary – eccentric sleuth with an initially-reluctant helper. The closest thing that I can compare it to is a TV show. In some ways, it almost reads as a YA adventure, if the lead characters were a bit younger. And the violence is pretty clean as well.

And I’ve seen a lot of UK sitcoms from the seventies. There’s no swearing – the story even makes a point by making Moon swear in a very odd way – “crap on a cracker” is possibly the oddest catchphrase I have ever seen. Thriller, because structurally, the books that it most closely resembles is the Jack Reacher books that I’ve read (which isn’t many to be fair), with clear villains and a plot that gets a bit over the top by the end of the book. The best description that I can give it is “Cosy Thriller”. First off, it’s definitely not a mystery. I have absolutely no idea who wrote what here, and as I’ve never read work from either of them before, I can’t make a guess as to whose writing style this most closely resembles. Phoef Sutton has worked mostly in television, but has authored and co-authored books before, notably Wicked Charms with Evanovich. Janet Evanovich is best known for her bounty hunter Stephanie Plum series and is, apparently, the “Queen Of Kick Ass Crime” – it says so on the cover. Knight soon has Moon tagging along on his investigation, and it is rapidly clear that some people don’t want them looking into the missing gold…
